Blending melodies: Uniting eastern and western musical traditions in the US

By Amrita Oak

She moves with a lightness in a heavy world - bold, playful, self-aware. Growing up in vibrant Los Angeles, inspired by her multi-cultural heritage, Reena always knew her true calling was composing. At Juilliard, one of just a few chosen from 180 to 200 applicants, she studied Western music to become a composer. A trip to India at 22 deepened her connection with Indian music, merging Western harmonies with Hindustani linearity.

“I started exploring Indian classical music because I realized if I continued with western classical music, I would be completely divorced from my own culture as I grew up.”

eena stands proud, very aware that she has chosen the road less travelled, but with a twinkle in her eye that suggests that it was worth it. She recalled a moving performance in rural Iowa where a student choir sang a "Tarana" she had composed -- the first time many of them had sung, or even heard, Indian classical music! Her composition "This Love Between Us" blends choir, orchestra, sitar, and tabla, celebrating global cultures.

She does not intend to limit herself to composing. Reena's impact extends well beyond the stage, revitalizing the artistic legacy of Indian culture. Through her nonprofit Shastra, she transforms how young musicians learn, infusing training with a global musical palette and nurturing culturally aware artists.

Reena encourages parents to broaden their children's cultural experiences, through attending performances and developing a creative practice. She has seen that young people who pursue a creative discipline alongside more standard academics are poised for the greatest success in our evolving economy.

“As Indian Americans, we are inherently innovative & adept at creating hybrid cultural identities. It's inspiring to see younger generations already embracing and finding their paths in these blended worlds.”
