Meera Kymal, Contributing Editor, India Currents

Meera Kymal is a Founder/Producer at DesiCollective Media and the Contributing Editor at the magazine India Currents. She writes about issues that impact minority communities in the South Asian diaspora through the lens of social justice, politics, and the arts. As a grant writer for India Currents, Meera has won funding from the Facebook Journalism Project, Google News Initiative, United Way Bay Area, and Silicon Valley Community Foundation, among others.

Meera is a 2021 and 2022 grantee from the USC Center for Health Journalism, reporting on domestic violence in the South Asian community in the ‘Desi Dost’ project. It recently won two first-place California Journalism Awards for In-Depth Reporting and Open In-Depth Reporting from the California News Publishers Association.

In 2022, Meera won a grant to report on aging as part of the first Altavoz Lab cohort. She has received several Journalistic Excellence awards from the San Francisco Press Club and from CNPA.

Meera holds a BA from Madras University, a Fellowship from Mount Holyoke College(MA), and MA in Communication from Ohio University.
