Vivek Maru

Founder and CEO, Namati

Vivek Maru founded Namati in 2011 to grow the global movement for legal empowerment. Namati and its partners have built cadres of community legal workers– sometimes called barefoot lawyers, or community paralegals– in ten countries. The paralegals have worked with over 65,000 people to protect community lands, enforce environmental law, and secure basic rights to healthcare and citizenship. Namati convenes the Global Legal Empowerment Network, made up of over 1000 groups in 120 countries. Vivek was named a “legal rebel” by the American Bar Association and a Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the World Economic Forum. He and Namati received the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship in 2016. Vivek’s writing has been published in the Guardian, Foreign Policy, Wired, the Yale Journal of International Law, and many others. He is a student of the Afro-Brazilian martial art capoeira angola.
