Sundar Pichai is an Indian-American business executive who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Alphabet Inc. and its subsidiary Google. He is one of the most influential leaders in the global technology industry, overseeing the company’s mission to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Born in Chennai, India, Pichai pursued his undergraduate degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, followed by a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. He later earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining Google, Pichai worked as a materials engineer and had a brief stint at the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, where he gained valuable business strategy experience that would later prove instrumental in his leadership roles.

Pichai joined Google in 2004 as the head of product management and development. He initially worked on the Google Toolbar, which enabled users of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox browsers to access Google’s search functionality. His early work on the toolbar was critically strategic, as it allowed Google to track browsing behavior and power its AdWords targeting engine. Recognizing the strategic importance of web browsers, Pichai championed the development of Google Chrome, even when the company was primarily known for its search engine. His vision proved transformative, as Chrome became one of the world’s most popular web browsers, used by over 1 billion people.

In 2014, Pichai took over product, engineering, and research efforts for all of Google’s products and platforms. His leadership during this period was marked by strategic focus on key consumer products that would reach hundreds of millions of users worldwide. In August 2015, Pichai was appointed as CEO of Google during a period of rapid evolution in the tech industry. Under his leadership, Google navigated through groundbreaking advancements and strategic acquisitions. His success as Google’s CEO led to his appointment as CEO of Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, in 2019.

As CEO of both Google and Alphabet, Pichai focuses on developing advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, to help people everywhere. His leadership philosophy centers on building great products while ensuring technology serves humanity’s broader interests. He continues to guide the company through significant technological shifts, particularly in the areas of AI and machine learning, positioning Google and Alphabet for continued innovation in the digital age.  He received the Padma Bhushan Award in 2022.
