Indian American engineer Manmohan Singh Kalsi and his wife Marie-Luise Schubert Kalsi donated $4 million to the University of Houston to support engineering research and education. The gift to UH’s Cullen College of Engineering will establish two endowed professorships, a faculty research fund, graduate fellowships and a seminar series in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

The gift builds on the Kalsis’ longstanding ties to the University of Houston. Kalsi earned both his master’s degree and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from UH, where the late professor Gabriel Fazekas played a major role in shaping his career.

In 2014, the Kalsis established an endowed professorship at Cullen College in Fazekas’ honor. During his graduate studies, Manmohan conducted research on hydrodynamic rotary seals under Fazekas’ mentorship, work that helped shape his later career in valve and sealing technology.

The Kalsi Faculty Research Fund will support emerging research, while endowed and current-use fellowships will help recruit outstanding graduate students. The Kalsi Seminar Series will bring internationally recognized researchers and industry leaders to campus for collaboration and knowledge exchange.
