Did you ever fail in school or consider dropping out? I did. I was sitting in the kitchen table, my eyes full of tears, looking at the big F on my algebra I exam… when suddenly Amma, my mother sat next to me. My heart started to race and my palms were getting sweaty as Amma, stared at my algebra test. Thoughts ran through my head about my parents, my caring mother and hard-working father, how I was letting them down…how, I was below grade level on all CA state tests in English and math throughout elementary school, labelled “unqualified” for any GATE/Honors classes in middle school, always in classrooms with the “slow” kids…. and now I was failing algebra I. I began to believe I was not smart and that school was not for me. Amma looked into my hopeless eyes and said, in Tamil, a language spoken in South India, the words: “Onalla mudyum, thambi”, which in English means “you can do it, son”. I wanted to believe Amma, that I could do it, but as I looked at the peach-colored book, I didn’t know if I could.
That algebra book terrified me as much as….. those angry dogs that Amma saw chase me around the neighborhood. And Amma, my mother, knew this. SO one day, Amma, looked at me and suddenly said, “Son, the “x,” it is just an angry “dog” who wants to be alone on its own “block” or side of the equation. (pic of angry dog “x”) The numbers, son, are like “intruders” on the dog’s neighborhood or side of the equation, and they need to escape to the other side or neighborhood before the x, the dog, eats them for lunch. In order for the numbers or intruders to escape to the other neighborhood or side of the equation, they have to change their sign or operation from add to subtract or subtract to add. The problem is solved ONLY when the x, the dog, is isolated or alone on its own block and the numbers or intruders are on the other side . And then… it hit me- learning algebra was like playing a game of “escape from the angry dog”. Amma, my mother, didn’t know a lot of English or math, but she was determined to teach using stories or in a language that I, “her student” …could… relate to or understand. Yes, she broke a few pencils in frustration, but, she would never give up on me. It is because Amma was a “hands on mentor” and “culturally responsive teacher” with a mindset that “failure is NOT an option” that I rose from an F- to a C and then finally an A in algebra.
This transformation from F to an A led me to graduate from high school, college and embark on a 20-year journey as a high school algebra teacher to thousands of kids, failing algebra, and then a Principal, serving at high schools, continuation schools and juvenile halls from East Oakland to North Sacramento, CA. I became the teacher to the unteachables, those kids with 6 F’s on a report card, at risk of being pushed out of school for fighting and poor attendance, and becoming what we call dropouts. Transforming thousands of failing 9th graders into success stories became my purpose and life calling… Along the way I was recognized as Sacramento County Teacher of the Year and California State Teacher of the Year (out of 400,000 teachers)…but, at heart, I was simply passing on to other kids, the gift or spirit that Amma had inspired in me…
I’ll never forget when one of my students, Lamar McCants, came to my office beaming with joy after he earned a 3.0 GPA and made the honor roll, after many years of failing in school. He was a 9th grade student in the CREATE Academy, where I was a teacher and director, and attending after school tutoring from Monday through Friday. I would give him a ride home after tutoring and we would stop by the local sandwich shop and grab a turkey special. He would tell me how much he loved the 9th grade and share his dreams and wishes about the kind of life he would like to live. But in the 10th grade, Lamar had to go back to the traditional education system, and like many of his peers didn’t feel connected or cared for. Slowly, he began failing his classes, missing school, behind in credits and one day he was expelled to a continuation school. And then I got the phone call. It was Lamar’s foster mom, sobbing on the phone saying, “Lamar was killed yesterday. I said “How?” She said, “He was killed in a drive-by shooting.” My heart dropped and I drove for 15 minutes to the nearest gas station to gather my emotions and with my hands in the air, I looked at the heavens and asked, “God, how could we lose Lamar?” Within 2 years, there were 3 more young men who died from retaliatory gun violence all related to Lamar’s death. I know over 50 former students of mine like Lamar, who were pushed out, “dropped out” of school and were either killed, or incarcerated before their 18th birthday. It is this experience, witnessing many young people, dropping out of school and falling into the deadly cycle of incarceration or violence, that further inspired me to start a movement one day that would solve our nation’s Dropout Crisis.
1 million dropouts a year in America are responsible forthe prison population, crimes, homicides, unhoused, and victims of sex trafficking, costing millions of lives and billions of dollars. The University of Chicago says that 80% of our dropouts could have been identified in the 9th grade based on failing grades and poor attendance alone. In other words, you and I, and 350 million other Americans, are hostage to the dropout crisis because our communities are not safe due to people we label as “criminals, felons and homeless”…when in reality, they were most likely just a child who was failing in the classroom and missing school in the 9th grade.
The Gates Foundation study of thousands of dropouts has titled the dropout crisis as our nation’s “#1 silent epidemic.” Why “Silent?” Because high schools across America, mostly in low income rural and urban communities report inflated and inaccurate graduation rates, failing… to report all of the students who dropped out or pushed out of school before 12th grade. In fact, Johns Hopkins University has identified 2,000 high schools across America, and labelled them as “dropout factories” because they lose nearly 50% of their starting 9th graders before graduation and these kids will never get reported. Evidence from Harvard University study of the silent epidemic, shows most of those missing students who left their home school due to a negative school experience, will NOT graduate in 4 years.
Why do students drop out of high school? There are 2 root causes for 1 million kids making the decision to drop out every year in America:
1)Root Cause #1: Low Student Motivation.
Many low-income students and students of color don’t have the proper care or accountability at home yet they attend schools where they will no one really knows them. Why? Because the traditional high school in America has 1 counselor for every 500 students. Can you imagine how many kids, feel, like no one knows their name, face, or story… and no one in school really, cares they are struggling?
2) Root Cause #2: Low Student Engagement in the Classroom. Stanford University research shows that the factor at school that has the greatest impact on student achievement is an effective teacher. Yet teachers in impoverished communities and schools of color are 6 times more likely to be unqualified and ineffective in their ability to engage students and this… and just one ineffective teacher can damage student learning for up to 4 years.
Today, I am the founder of the Miracle University High School and Dropout Prevention Movement. Our Dropout Prevention Movement officially begin in Sacramento, CA in 2023. In Sacramento, there are roughly 4000 high school Dropouts every year who produce 80% of the city’s crimes, homelessness, and sex trafficking, costing over $1 billion dollars per year. Our mission at Miracle University, is to eliminate the dropout crisis, by ensuring ALL potential high school “dropouts” in every city, graduate in 4 years from high school, prepared to succeed in college or career technical world. Our vision is to prevent 80% of crimes, incarceration, gun violence, homelessness and sex trafficking in America by ending the Dropout Crisis in every city in America.
At Miracle University High School, every child feels cared for by the right mentor. At Miracle University, we call this a Handz on Mentor. These mentors are culturally responsive advocates, often from the community, and are specialized in connecting with the heart. They are matched with every child based on common (SIL) struggles, interests, and language. (Pic of Handz on Mentors). They are trained to support (TPH) teachers in the classroom, communicate with parents, and make home visits. Handz on Mentors hold every student on campus accountable and support them with (ABCW) attendance, behavior, classwork, and wellness or mental health, every single day of the school year. Therefore, we can finally say every single child has a champion on campus who knows their name, face, and story, NEVER gives up on them. Furthermore, at Miracle University, every child is connected with an effective teacher trained in the CREATE teaching model. In addition to having subject matter knowledge, every teacher at Miracle University is specialized in connecting with the heart and unlocking the mind. Every teacher is trained to be culturally responsive and teach in ways that students can relate to and understand. In addition to Handz on Mentors and CREATE teachers, every student at Miracle University has access to the ground-breaking Arthur Ai curriculum. This innovative standards-based personalizes the academic instruction based on every student’s individual learning modality. This Arthur Ai curriculum helps every Miracle student to have an Ivy League-caliber education. The curriculum also offers a personal AI tutor that never gives up on them. When I reflect back now, I am grateful that I experienced failure in algebra. I am thankful to Amma for uplifting me when I was failing in school, being my mentor and ultimately planting a Miracle seed within me. I feel so grateful now that Miracle University, in partnership with the city of Sacramento, is also discussing implementing this school model, city-wide, in order to tackle our dropout crisis! The next time you run into our brothers and sisters who are experiencing homelessness, incarceration, or stuck in a cycle of crime and violence, please, I encourage you to see them as 13-year-old geniuses who were victims of this silent epidemic. Whether you are an educator, parent community member, we ALL, can and must be a part of preventing this crisis. The level of education is the #1 determinant of your life quality and life expectancy, according to the American Public Health Association, therefore, ending the dropout crisis, will lead to a rebirth and bring life to every neighborhood and every city. So, I invite you to solve the dropout crisis by reaching your city’s failing 9th graders, immersing them in an effective mentoring and teaching model, for all 4 years that will unlock their potential. When we do this, not only will we protect our children, and positively impact the country’s economy, WE WILL ALSO, ALL, ENJOY more peace, more safety, more wellness, more, happiness, and a better, longer life.
