Ocean Drive to Marine Drive: Celebrating 100 Years of Art Deco in Miami

September 19, 2025

When I first stepped into Miami Beach’s famed Art Deco district, I was struck by how familiar it felt. The pastel-colored facades, bold geometric lines, and nautical motifs immediately reminded me of home—Mumbai’s Marine Drive. Though separated by oceans, both cities stand as global beacons of the Art Deco movement, carrying forward a legacy that began in Paris nearly a century ago.

This October, Art Deco Alive! comes to Miami, seeding and curating its very first edition in the city. As the Founder and Curatorial Director Mumbai along with Co-Founders and Curatorial Directors Miami, Salma Merchant Rahmathulla and Gayatri Hingorani Dewan it is our privilege to shape this landmark celebration through an immersive program of exhibitions, walks, conversations, and cultural experiences. From October 8 to October 12, Art Deco Alive! will host a dynamic series of events that not only honor the past but also reimagine the future of Art Deco in our lives today.

My personal journey into cultural storytelling began during my years at Time Out, where I worked closely with the worlds of art, design, and heritage. That experience of curating and amplifying voices around culture deeply informs how I approach Art Deco Alive!—as a living dialogue between cities, communities, and histories.

Salma Merchant Rahmathulla shares: Art Deco is our starting point, but what we really want people to walk away with is a sense of how connected the world is. Miami and Mumbai might seem like opposites, but they share energy, ambition, migration stories, and creative resilience. We hope people will see how deeply two places can echo each other—through architecture, yes, but also through culture, fashion, music, cinema, and the human drive to make meaning.

Gayatri Hingorani Dewan adds: Mumbai — after Miami — has the second-largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world. More than 200 Deco structures line the city’s streets,

from Marine Drive to Oval Maidan, including cinemas, apartment blocks, and even hospitals and schools. Yet unlike Miami, Mumbai’s Deco heritage has rarely been celebrated globally. For me personally, having grown up in Mumbai, and now living in Miami, it felt so natural to connect the dots.”

Mapping a Century of Art Deco

At the heart of the festival is the exhibition Ocean Drive to Marine Drive: Mapping a Century of Art Deco Across Miami Beach & Mumbai at the Art Deco Museum. Developed collaboratively with the Art Deco Mumbai Trust and the Miami Design Preservation League, the exhibition explores how Deco shaped skylines, influenced everyday objects, and infused cultural life in both cities. Walking through the show, you encounter not just architecture but furniture, typography, memorabilia, and design that reflect Deco’s “total design” philosophy. It is a cross-continental conversation, opening fresh perspectives rather than presenting a single history.

A Weekend of Heritage and Glamour

The celebrations officially open with the 1920s Cocktails Party on October 10th—a glamorous evening of Indo-Latin style at the Art Deco Museum. Live jazz, vintage cocktails, and an exhibition preview make it a perfect curtain-raiser.

Over the following days, guests can immerse themselves in Heritage Walks through the historic Art Deco District, exploring landmarks like the Carlyle and Cavalier, or join Family Day Walks for a more interactive experience with children. These walks blend history, Hollywood glamour, and well-loved local stories into a journey through design and culture.

The Symposium: Where Ideas Meet Design

For those who want to go deeper, the Art Deco Alive! Symposium on October 11th at The Wolfsonian-FIU promises a day of rigorous dialogue. Panels include:

The Beginnings of Art Deco – tracing the parallel histories of Miami and Mumbai in the 1930s.

Preservation Becomes Power – how the 1990s revival reshaped Miami’s creative economy.

Imagining the Future – envisioning Deco’s place in contemporary urban identities.

These conversations will be led by an incredible lineup of architects, cultural commentators, and civic leaders including Rahul Mehrotra, Craig Robbins, Andres Viglucci, and Commissioner Tanya Bhatt.

Artistry Beyond Architecture

The festival isn’t limited to buildings. At The Webster, The Jewelry Edit (October 10–24) presents limited-edition creations from India and Latin America. Designers such as The Gem Palace, Tallin Jewels, and Silvia Furmanovich reinterpret Deco motifs through gems, materials, and craftsmanship rooted in their own cultures. It’s a reminder that Art Deco was always about lifestyle—an aesthetic that spilled from architecture into jewelry, fashion, and design.

Why This Matters to Us

For us, Art Deco has always been more than just style. It is a bridge—between continents, cultures, and generations. Mumbai’s Deco skyline was the backdrop of my childhood, while Miami’s Deco continues to inspire new conversations about preservation, identity, and creativity. To see these two cities celebrated together, in dialogue, is deeply meaningful.

For Salma, Gayatri and me, Art Deco Alive! Miami is not just an event; it is a reminder of how design shapes who we are, and how legacies of the past can inspire the futures we build. And just as importantly, we hope this initiative inspires people to value the power of collaboration. Because ultimately, Art Deco Alive! is about bringing people together — between continents, between generations, and between disciplines.

So, whether you’re a longtime Deco enthusiast, a curious traveler, or someone looking for an unforgettable weekend in Miami—this is a moment to witness, experience, and celebrate.
